What Is An Ethical Garment?

The collapse of Rana Plaza – the 8 storey garment garment factory in Bangladesh which killed 1,134 and injured hundreds two years ago contributed to a shift in attitude towards and awareness of ethical clothing production practices. More often than not it’s small businesses and independent brands who are leading the way in the creation and retail of sustainable fashion but what exactly does this involve? In order for clothing manufacturers to be classed as ethical they need to consider the following:

The Benefits of Sampling

There’s nothing worse than forking out a chunk of your savings on a new run of t-shirts only to receive them and wish that you’d made the artwork a little bit bigger or the colour a tiny bit darker. Digital mockups are great but nothing beats a physical sample of your potential garment. Still need convincing? Here’s our top 5 reasons why sampling rules.

But with the number of art and design students on the rise in the UK* there’s clearly something in it. We decided to ask some of the artists we’ve collaborated with recently to complete the following sentence: I am a creative because…

Pick Me Up Q&A Series: DXTR

One tenth of street art collective The Weird DXTR was given his nickname by friends who would describe his kitchen, often littered with paint kettles and and spray cans as Dexter’s Laboratory. His work is most often described as ‘Pop Surrealism’ and he’s painted walls all over Europe as well as creating work for clients ranging from Amnesty International to Nike. We caught up with him to find out more.

Pick Me Up Q&A Series: Mr. Penfold

Bristol based street artist and illustrator Mr. Penfold started learning how to use a spray can aged 12 and cites airbrushing, skate graphics and his parents collection of abstract art as some of his major influences. He was one of the first artists we approached about a Pick Me Up collaboration and have been busy developing a sweatshirt, tote bag, 10 colour t-shirt. We’ll also be releasing a variable screen print edition in which each background was individually hand painted. Read on for more info as well as details about how to pre order some of the pieces ahead of the launch on Thursday.

Pick Me Up Q&A Series: Sean Morris

Sean Morris’ characters live in a surreal semi apocalyptic world inspired by bad horror films, here they practice strange rituals often wearing nothing more than a bikini. This combination would normally result in pretty bizarre work however his simple character based line drawings and naive colour palette make for a winning stylistic combo. He’s bringing t-shirts, vest dresses and a brand new 4 colour screen print edition to our exhibition space at Pick Me Up. Want to know more? Read on…

Pick Me Up Q&A Series: Martina Martian

20 year old Sydney based illustrator Martina Martian (real surname Calvi in case you were wondering) taught herself to embroider from Youtube videos. She’s applied her self professed ‘Saved By The Bell’ inspired style to everything from street art to enamel pins. We’re pretty excited to bring some of her work to this side of the world and her all-over t-shirts and vest dresses are available for pre order now. Here’s a little more about her.
